Bordetellosis

Bordatella bronchiseptica is the bacteria responsible for causing kennel cough in dogs. The other name for this disease is canine infectious respiratory disease or infectious tracheobronchitis. It affects the upper respiratory tract of dogs. It is a well studied disease in dogs however its zoonotic implications in humans are not well known. Very few cases of Bordatella bronchiseptica in humans are known.

This disease does not occur in healthy humans. It has been observed only in immunocompromised humans. It may transmit via contact with ill cats and dogs or recently vaccinated dogs. Nosocomial transmission of this disease has also been reported. It is transmitted by inhalation of this bacteria.

In humans-

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Lethargy
  • Fever
  • Reduced appetite

These signs can progress to pneumonia if not attended to.

In animals-

Signs in animals are same as that of humans.

Bacterial culture and RT-PCR are the choice of diagnoses for this infection.

Dogs should be vaccinated against kennel cough regularly. I your pets show signs of coughing and sneezing for a prolonged period of time, it is important to get them checked by veterinarians.Strict hand washing regime should be followed. The mouth should be covered while coughing or sneezing. If you have signs that resemble kennel cough, it is necessary that you get yourself checked by doctors.
