Rickettsial and Chlamydial Zoonoses

Conjunctivitis -
Chlamydophila felis
Many Chlamydophila spp. are responsible for causing diseases in different animals and birds. C. psittaci is a well known pathogen that causes ornithosis. C. trachomatis is an STD (sexually transmitted disease) of humans. Chlamydophila pneumoniae is a pathogen responsible for community acquired pneumonia. Chlamydia abortus causes ovine abortion. The pathogen of importance to us with the association of zoonosis is Chlamydia felis.
Chlamydia felis is a pathogen responsible for causing conjunctivitis in cat along with other symptoms like extreme hyperaemia of the nictitating membrane, blepharospasm and ocular discomfort. Some other symptoms that can be observed are transient fever, inappetence and weightloss. Antibodies of this organism has been found from dogs as well however no clinical signs have been observed until now. This disease usually occurs on close association with cats, but it is extremely rare. Till date, around 7-10 cases of this disease have been observed around the world. Most of these people were immunocompromised. The zoonotic impact of this pathogen is low and still under research. The best way to not get this disease is by maintaining good hygiene standards.
